The DigiFood Project is pleased to launch our new report, Sensors, Seeds, and Sovereignty: Who Governs Agricultural Data?

The report maps the emerging landscape of agricultural data governance. It aims to provide stakeholders with an understanding of the different perceptions of value of—and risks associated with—different types of agricultural data that have led competing actors to adopt differing governance strategies. The central finding is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to agricultural data governance. Instead, the report identifies three paradigms that have structured discussions in this regard: techno-economic, socio-political, and environmental governance. By analysing salient debates and issues within each of these paradigms, the report reveals how emerging governance initiatives mainly highlight the commercial value of agricultural data. Such initiatives promote measures that aim at building functional and fair markets for such data, but they do little to challenge corporate control over data infrastructure.

The report will be launched on Wednesday, 14 October from 16:00 - 17:00 CET on Zoom. The webinar will feature a presentation of the report by Matthew Canfield and Daniel Bertram, followed by comments from Jennifer Clapp, IPES-Food and University of Waterloo, and Soledad Vogliano, ETC Group.
